Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
I just got into an argument with a random Western Ancient Civ professor about when the Fall of the Republic was when all I wanted to do was nerd out about Rome.
He said it was with Commodus… Yeah, Commodus. Why? Because he was the last to use the title Princeps. (Though I seem to recall Diocletian to be the first one not to use that title, but I could be wrong there)
And I’m all like..

The very idea of a Princeps negates the idea of what the republic was. Just because the senate is “there” after the Caesars do their thang doesn’t really mean anything if they are just going to do what the Princeps tells them to do anyway.

Though I should mention that I don’t think there is a specific date for the Fall of the Republic… Just like the Fall of Rome, it happened over a few centuries in my TOTALLY HUMBLE opinion.
